Parenting’s website had an interesting poll question: “Is it okay for fertility doctors to help a woman have a baby no matter how old she is?”
By Sunday afternoon, the poll garnered 8,036 responses with 61 percent saying “no” and the rest replying “yes.”
Of course, it was a quick poll that didn’t define “old.” I envisioned a single, decrepit 50-plus-year-old woman and replied “no” myself. It doesn’t seem fair to bring a child into this world if the woman may not be around to see it graduate from high school. But 40-years-old doesn’t seem “too old” for me. I have seen many 40-year-old mothers in great shape and high spirits bearing children.
