My son was exposed to Measles.

June 25, 2006

Both of my children are unvaccinated, completely.  NOT ONE SHOT!  I did alot of reasearch on the subject while I was pregnant and came to the conclusion that I didn’t want them to be vaccinated.  In that decision, my husband and I realized that sending them to school would be impossible, so we pledged to homeschool them.  However, our local school has decided to enroll them anyway, my four year old son just finished his first year of pre-school.  Without missing one day of it from being sick.  He’s never had an ear infection, a major cold, or anything more than teething since he was born.

So I was surprised the other day when my mother-in-law called in a panic that while she had my son last weekend, she took him to the grocery store, where, apparently a measles patient had been that very day.  This patient was unaware of his condition at the time, but since has become the 15th case of Measles in the Boston area.  “You’re children aren’t vaccinated for the Measles….!!!!!!” she screamed.  “You have to take them RIGHT now and get them a shot.”  Whoa lady, chill the eff out I wanted to say, really we don’t connect too well, but I contained her and tried to calm her down.  I guess I didn’t do too good of a job at that, because I’ve heard from everyone around town that she’s bitching about us and our decisions.  I’m not the one that exposed him to the Measles…..!  But she didn’t do it knowingly and she wouldn’t obviously.
So in doing some research on the whole subject, I just wanted to share with MT’s what the symptoms are, and what I am going to do to protect my son from being the 16th patient.  Measles is a highly contagious, childhood viral infection that begins as a flu with symptoms of fatigue, poor appetite and sudden high fever. Achey muscles and a queasy stomach are also common. Before the rash appears, the eyes become red, teary and light sensitive, and a runny nose and persistent cough are common.  Measles is caused by a virus (paramyxovirus) that is spread through the air or by contact with infectious droplets from the nose, mouth, or throat. The disease is so contagious that it’s possible to contract it by merely being in the same room as an infected person.

A few years ago I came across grapefruit seed extract or GSE.  There are many brand names for GSE, but that doesn’t matter, I’m not trying to sell any products to anyone. Grapefruit seed extract is being used successfully in humans and animals alike to fight many types of internal and external infections caused from parasites (single and multi-celled), viruses, bacteria, fungus and more!  So I started putting 3 drops (rec’d dose for kids) in EVERY sippy cup, we are one week into possible signs of infection and we haven’t witnessed a single change in our son other than how he would be developing normally.  Not a big story, but something I wanted to share with the community.

Any other ideas? aside from “Vaccinate the poor kids…!”
