MotherTalkers is back – and we’re on a mission

Hello, everyone and welcome back to MotherTalkers. The mothership. The place where it all started, more than a decade ago.

We’re relaunching this website with a new look, but with the same passion: to build an online community of progressive women, mothers, and engaged citizens in this world. Many of us have built strong bonds with each other since MotherTalkers first launched in 2005 (more on our history and our future in later posts), and it’s time to build a bigger community and bring more people in together.

In the coming days, we will be rolling out posts and themes that are in line with our fierce and proud progressive politics. Today, we’re gathering here in solidarity, a place to draw friendship and support as we face the inauguration of Donald J. Trump as the 45th president of the United States of America.

Let this serve as our first open thread. How are you today? Want to introduce yourself all over again?

  • Rachel Alembakis

Hi, I’m Rachel, one of the publishers on MotherTalkers! I’m the mother of two daughters, aged 11 and 7. I’ve been a part of the MotherTalkers community since the very beginning. I’m a financial journalist, and I hail originally from New Jersey, although I’ve lived in Melbourne, Australia for nearly 11 years.

As to what I’m doing today, I’m actively avoiding any and all coverage of the Inagur-disaster and finishing my pink pussycat hat to wear in solidarity with y’all!

    • Jill Hofmans

      I <3 U.

  • 1afg

Hey all! Great to see you here:)

    • SwissClogs

Hey there! I haven’t been able to figure out if we know you from one of the past incarnations of MT. Could you give us a few pointers about yourself? We certainly welcome new people to the site as well, and we’d love to get to know you if you are. Thanks!

  • Mary Gerdes Kendrick

Hi! I’m Mary. I’m the mother of two sons, 15 and 11. I’ve been a member of the Mother Talkers community since the younger boy was in diapers. I’m an educator. I taught high school English for many years and am now an IB coordinator at a middle school in Charlotte, NC.

What am I doing today? Going to work in the morning, avoiding all TVs, and then driving to Raleigh. I lead three Future City teams who have their annual competition at NC State tomorrow. There are multiple marches happening in NC tomorrow; I can’t go because of the competition, but my heart is lifted by how many women I know who ARE going–at least 20 have told me about their plans to march!

    • Mary Gerdes Kendrick

And, just found out that my mom is thinking about marching in Dallas!

    • suzanne77

      Hello!!

  • Sue Izeman

Hi…..I’m Sue. I live in Queens NY. I have a 25yo daughter and a 17 year old son….both of whom challenge me to be progressive and to stretch my brain. I work with kids with Autism and their teachers and families. My big concern in the next four years will be keeping supports for price with disabities funded and available.

    Welcome back Mothertalkers!!

    • Rachel Alembakis

If De Vos is confirmed and she goes through with what she threatens, in terms of rolling back protections for disabled students, how much damage could it do, Sue?

      • Sue Izeman

Well, I doubt shed be able to repeal a law that is 40 years old, affects so many people. In confirmation hearing this week she alluded to state control (when she didn’t know it’s a federal law, ugh). If the feds shift interpretation of the law to states, it would create huge variability in education (get out if Mississippi and Florida!!!). She could also cut funding, I guess, making it harder (or more locally funded) to provide special education. She could definitely cut research , innovation, and training funding.

I think an immediate impact could be some states NOT following IDEA and forcing more parents to court, knowing the Fed DOE will support the state

        • SnarkyMom

Since the Feds have never adequately funded IDEA and the states have never stepped up to fill in the gap in any real way, it’s easy to imagine what would come next.

    • suzanne77

      Hello!

  • lilianna28

Hi I’m Missy from the West suburbs of Chicago. My kids are DD 10, DS 6 and DS 4. I work as a graphic designer in retail. I’m in mourning for our country today, and I want to find a way to channel my fear into something meaningful. Today though I want to pour and nope. Tomorrow I march downtown!

    • Rocky

Holy crap BOGO baby is 4?!?!?!?

      • lilianna28

He’ll be FIVE in 4 months

        • Rocky

          You’re blowing my mind.

    • 1afg

hey where are you exactly? i’m in Oak Park.
also, i was told i have to work tomorrow. unbelievable.

  • OMG it’s 2006 again! I’m sitting here in yoga pants, sweatshirt, no bra, sleep deprived and I’m on MotherTalkers. πŸ˜‰ I’m Hilary and I live in a rural suburb of Columbus, Ohio with my husband, 16 year old son, and almost (this Sunday) 14 year old daughter. I’m an artist and community art educator.

    • suzanne77

      Hello gorgeous!

    • Binz

So happy to see you here, Hilary!

  • Pot Stirrer

Hi, Pot Stirrer here. New name from the old site. Mother of one tween. The new handle (see what I did there?) is a nod to women’s suffrage and women’s rights as both movements were undoubtably cooked up in a kitchen. Let’s stir something up, ladies.

  • Teresa Fortner Betts

I’m Teresa, mother to seven adult children and grandmother of four. Wow….what a trip we’ve all had, right? And it goes on….and even though I know if feels as if the train is about to come off the tracks, we gotta hold on and remember we have each other. We’re still here. All of us. The same people who elected Barack Obama. Twice. That’s still us. That’s still the US. It’s difficult for me, because the Obama presidency meant more to me than just politics. Coming when it did, it offered a back drop to our lives…felt as if we became part of the narrative of the story. felt like it was part of the narrative of our story as a family as well as collectively as a people. So, today, I think I’m gonna try to hold onto that.

    • suzanne77

      What a long strange trip it’s been…

  • SnarkyMom

I’m SnarkyMom, rocking my name from the old site, but with a brand new avatar. Two kiddos- a boy who’s 15 and a girl who’s 13. (How the hell did that happen?) I’m an educator living in New England, trying to figure out what the hell I’m going to do now. Started running again this morning and my Zombies! Run episode felt just a little too real. Great to be back!

    • minnmom

How do you change your avatar? It gave me this Boston terrier which I must have chosen back in the day, and it’s fine, but how would I change it? I can’t figure it out.

      • SnarkyMom

I had to set up a new Disquis. The old one had my full name and I’m keeping it on the down low, as the kids say.

        • Jill Hofmans

          I couldn’t figure any of it out..blerg.

          • SwissClogs

Maybe try it from a desk/laptop? You may have to go through the Disqus site, it seems

  • Katie

    test? test?

  • Katie

OMG FINALLY – Jeez you guys I really was having eating alone at the lunch table agita for a while! It’s ME! it’s ME! still in NH still with my wife Kelly, still raising the next great hope for the integration of theater and women’s studies. Still fat. Still sarcastic.

    • Rachel Alembakis

      HOORAY!!!!!!

    • suzanne77

      Hola!

  • minnmom

Look I am a chicken now! It’s Anne, still mother of a boy (13) and girl (8) and two chickens (3.5), though we’ll be adding a couple more this spring and I CAN’T WAIT.

    • minnmom

chickens that is. I’m done with bebbies.

      • SnarkyMom

Oh good. You scared me there a minute.

  • CornflakeGirl

Hidee Hi! CornflakeGirl signing back on. If I can figure out the avatar I’ll use my photo for a little while!

  • lyubov

Yay!! I’m in πŸ™‚ Still need to set the avatar… I’m going to try to use one of Hilary’s art pieces on love to match my new name πŸ™‚

    • lyubov

And hopefully @hilaryframbes:disqus is ok with my use of art as avatar. Let me know if it’s a problem.

I’m super excited I figured it out!!

It’s Sara, mom to DD (12), DS (9), and DS (almost 1.5 – what?!?!).

      • Jill Hofmans

He is NOT almost 1 and 1/2. Stop it.

        • lyubov

I know… We still call him “baby” and he’s really so very “toddler” now… It’s very weird to not be talking about his age in “months” anymore. I feel old πŸ™‚

          • Jill Hofmans

I still call Sam my baby….he’s 12. lol

  • morningwalker

well, hello, mothertalkers! Woot Woot to you all from my desk at home here in the Bay Area. I am down with a huge head cold and wracking cough. Guess what made me sick? Yup, you guessed it. Agent Orange the YUGEST, BIGLIEST toxic cloud ever known to humankind. But, tomorrow I intend to be marching, rain or shine, or sickness. You can’t grab this. Pussy Galore unite. xo Glad to be here. xx

  • Happy Clam

Did it! One thing to be Happy about today.

  • lilianna28

I am so bad at the names. SO BAD AT THE NAMES. I’m gonna need a google doc.
I can’t with Facebook today. Or twitter. Or my office where my new boss is flitting about being all happy and stuff

    • CornflakeGirl

      That’s why I’m using a photo for a while!

    • Sue Izeman

      Me too. πŸ™

  • Rocky

    Is this thing on?

I’m Rocky from Chicago, WAHM with 2 daughters, age 8 and 11, two female cats, three chestnut mares (they live in the ‘burbs), and a sainted DH who puts up with an awful lot of estrogen in his life.

    –R

    • lilianna28

You have as many mares as I have cats πŸ˜€

    • Jill Hofmans

I miss you, R! How are you??

      • SwissClogs

        You’re here! Yay!

      • Rocky

So good to see you! Everyone is well aside from the trauma of the election. I’m still trying to do it all – except for housework. I still don’t do that.

        • Jill Hofmans

          <3

  • lilianna28

    WHYYYYYYYYY are their riots. WHYYYY….

    • lilianna28

I mean, of COURSE I KNOW WHY and I do not think for one second that the anger isn’t justified but we would be so much better off if there weren’t

    • Rachel Alembakis

RIOTS??? Ugh, people, hold it together!

  • SwissClogs

Yay! I’m here as well. Got my old screenname, and the avatar I had for a bit turned up as well! So far so good.
And since we’re doing introductions: I’m SwissClogs, came to the old mothership by way of Dailykos, where I had this handle, because I am Dutch, and lived in Switzerland at the time. Before that, I lived in DC 2000-2002 (nto the best years to be there), and after Switzerland, DH and I moved back to our native Netherlands. We have two daughters, of June 2006 and April 2008, and I found Mothertalkers when I was on maternity leave after having DD1. I travel to the US regularly, and managed to meet up with a few MTs over the years. I love this community dearly, and hope the relaunch works out well!

    • mamacita

I saw today that someone wasn’t allowed into the U.S. because he worked on archeology digs in Iraq (I think). He’s never lived there. I thought of you doing geology all over the world which made me happy in a very depressing moment πŸ™‚

      • SwissClogs

Yeah, this stuff worries me, a lot. I’ve never been to any of the countries involved this time, but who knows what’s next? There are so many people who travel for work, or who may have relatives in other countries; it seems crazy from here.
Glad it made you happy to think of me though πŸ™‚

  • Lesley

Lesley here, seeing if I can make this work. I’m from NC, married, and have one grown daughter and one in college. Also we have a dog and a cat. I’m a preschool teacher and am going through training to be a guardian ad litem.

    • suzanne77

Guardian ad litem? Wow! That’s such a cool thing! Protecting children in very vulnerable situations, bless.

      • Lesley

It’s been something on my radar for a long time, and it seems that the time is right for me.

  • Dana

Woohoo! First try! Formerly Ides of June but TS is my MFP and endomondo login. I am married and have two sons, 12 (for a few more weeks) and 10. No longer give a crap about what people think. SOOOOOOO SOOO HAPPY to be back aboard the ‘ship!
The 12 is taking the SAT tomorrow as part of a smart-kid program. I reminded him to bring his calculator home and he said “I don’t have one.” Where’d it go? he had one first semester. Ugh, boys!! Anyway, after that we are going to the local march. I’m heading down early to volunteer and DH is supposed to bring the kids. He’s starting to balk “if it’s raining.” ARE YOU SERIOUS< GET YOUR ASS DOWN HERE.

    • Was it Ides of June because that’s your birthday? Cuz that’s my birthday!

      • Dana

        No, it’s my baby’s!

      • SwissClogs

And you’re here, too! Good to see you!

  • LiturgyGeek

What’s up ladies! Elizabeth here, minister, mama, runner, bacon aficionado. My kid is Bacon Baby and she’s 5. Two dogs, sweet spouse, and lots of chaos – wouldn’t have it any other way! I am struggling today after that dreadful inauguration…..but it’s a workday in HAWAII and I got to swim at the beach before work. So, you know.

    • LiturgyGeek

Hmmm, when will my avatar show up….?

    • Jill Hofmans

I remember when you joined MT – BEFORE M was even conceived! Yayayayayayay! πŸ™‚

    • suzanne77

      Hey girl, hey!

  • Hm. So I seem to have some kind of account on this site with a very old picture of me! Ah, the Interwebs. I think my old profile name on the old MT site was mpg, but I’ll just use my full name here now since it’s all set up. Not too much that’s different with me except that my sons are now 11 and 14, which just seems totally impossible. I live in Delaware. This site was such a lifeline for me lo those many years ago. Nice to see everyone here.

    • Jill Hofmans

It WAS mpg for sure…that’s how I think of you even when I see you on FB. πŸ™‚ <3

    • SwissClogs

The order of the comments is a bit messed up for me, but I’ll probably get used to whathever Disqus does.
Anyway, I’ll say again that I’m happy you joined us here!

      • SwissClogs

Turns out you can decide how Disqus sorts comments – yay! Things make much more sense now πŸ™‚

  • lawyermama

Hello, all! It’s Stephanie. I’ll have to figure out how to change my avatar to a photo to make life easier. It feels a bit odd (in a good way) to be using my old blogging handle. And it feels great to be on the MT site since I joined y’all during the Facebook years.
Ok intro – I’m a recovering attorney/non-profit founder/communications director turned mostly SAHM. I have 3 boys ages 12, 11, and 3. Bean is the 3 year old and he’s the most photographed toddler on the planet, I swear! We live in SE Virginia with a dog, 2 cats, and 5 chickens. (We’re down a few chickens thanks to some neighborhood foxes.) I’m also completely shit faced right now so I’m amazed at how well autocorrect can work when you’re drowning your sorrows after the inauguration of a cheeto.

    • Rocky

      You’re cracking me up.

  • Jennifer

    Hi everyone!
I’m Jennifer, I’m a WAHM to two boys, ages 8 and 2 (almost 3), and soon to be step mama to a sweet 2 year old girl . I’m in Kansas, believe it or not, and I’m excited to check out this new (to me) community!

    • Sheri

Welcome! We have another Kansan here, and I’m a Jayhawk alum twice over. I’m now your neighbor in the flyover red states. Our governor seems to want to follow in your governor’s footsteps. : / Gotta beat that back if we can.

      • Jennifer

Glad to hear I’m not alone!
I’m a KSU alum myself but I’m sure we can still be friends πŸ˜‰. Yeah…. not a good path. He hasn’t done us any favors at all.

  • Sheri

It’s working finally! I had trouble with my log in, and then especially couldn’t do it on my phone. But from the laptop it seems to be no problem. Glad to have y’all back outside of facebook. Thanks for all the hard work–I’m excited to see whether we can revitalize things here. In case you haven’t cracked the code of who I am–I’m the mom of 2 girls (10 and 5) and a college professor from Omaha. I need to figure out a picture to use. I think I want to be a little bit more anonymous here than on the secret facebook page.

  • Kat Baker

    Hi my loves!!!

    • Jill Hofmans

      Yay!

  • Steel Blue Kittycat

I think I got it working!

Hi, I have a new user name! I used to be Sister Q. I live just east of Philly with my DH and my son, Stormy, 4. Also a dog and a cat, though not the one in my picture.

My favorite color is steel blue, and also, I like the notion of the strength of steel and the color blue. And Pottermore says my patronus would be a cat, and, well, besides how much I love cats, there’s also something political about being one nowadays, hmm?

    • suzanne77

      Hey friend!

  • Thataussiegeek

    I’m here!!!!!

    • Thataussiegeek

Also…I’m a science geek, originally American, but now Australian, one husband, one adolescent daughter, one crazy son, one dog, two cats, two stick insects, four bob tailed lizards, four yabbies, and enough guppies to make a meal. I work in research at a big university, read all the time, and do as little exercise as I can get away with.

      • Jill Hofmans

Do you really i.d. as Australian now? Interesting….

        • Thataussiegeek

I do. I tend to call myself Ausmerican, but in two years I’ll reach the 50/50 point…as many years in both places. And in so many ways, I don’t feel at home any more when I visit stateside.

          • Jill Hofmans

Write a blog post on this …. diaspora for lack of a better term, I suppose. I’m fascinated to hear your thoughts!

  • Jill Hofmans

Yayayayayayayayayay! Jill here. Known in these parts as GiGi. I live in Columbus and have two kids – Sally, who is now 14, and Sam, 12. I am not in the FB group so have missed this space. Looking forward to what this brings….yayayayaayayayayay!

    • SwissClogs

      Yay! So happy you’re here!

  • Jill Hofmans

I am seriously tearing up at seeing all the old handles. I couldn’t figure it out, but am soooooo nostalgic right now for those of you who did!!! (also, not liking the “like” button option because, DUH, I like everything and everybody. So, if I don’t up vote you, or whatever, please know it’s not personal and that I’m just lazy). <3

    • Binz

      Jill!! smoochies!

  • suzanne77

Okay, got logged on the other day, but didn’t have time to post! It’s me, Suzanne! Wife of Lawyerly and mom of Princess and Peanut! I joined MT original whilst pregnant with Peanut! Lo, these 9 years ago!!! Can you believe?! Hi everyone!

    • SwissClogs

Hi! Good to see you here!

  • Binz

How great is this? Many thanks to those who worked so hard to get us back up and running! I’m Binz – living in Atlanta, 4 kids (2 grown and flown, 2 just started college), 1 spouse, 2 cats. Going through a million life changes, all seeming to come together at the same time. I’ll spend the next couple of years focused on salesforce consulting, regaining a basic level of fitness, and keeping my head in the sand to avoid this new political reality.

    • mamacita

Oh — I need to regain basic fitness too. I bet your “basic” is way higher than mine!

      • Binz

I thought I would sign up for a 5K, forcing myself to at least walk daily. Unfortunately, I wound up with a (minor) torn meniscus, which is just now healing (no surgery because it may be in a red zone – it’s not perfect, but much better). I really should be out walking, but I’d rather chat with all y’all, as we say in these parts:D

        • mamacita

Bummer about your injury πŸ™ I am trying to walk daily as well.

    • SwissClogs

Ah, I thought it was you! Yay!

  • mamacita

Hey now, MotherTalkers!! I’m mamacita from the mothership. My “child” is 23 now, a college graduate, gainfully employed, and NOT a ditchdigger. Will wonders never cease? I’ve missed having all you wonderful women in one place. Love you!

  • mamacita

Hey everybody, it’s so good to see you all in one place again! I’m mamacita / Lisa. My only “child” is 23 and NOT a ditchdigger. This is my second time posting a comment, I guess the first one didn’t take. If there are 2, apologies!

    • SwissClogs

Woohoo, mamacita!! So happy you’re here!
And yes, your comment posted twice πŸ™‚

  • ChilePepper

I’m here! Jen from Chile, mom to two teen boys (18 and 15), the elder of which is currently on an exchange program in Germany and the younger of which is at kayak camp. I’m an economics and finance translator, chef, and winery owner.

  • Carissa Martos

Still a grad-student on the left coast. Graduating in 6 months. Still have two great kids, still interpreting, still an education advocate, still shoot off at the mouth.

Haven’t the foggiest how to add an avatar, but feel the mothership was a better fit than FB for MT (IMHO), so I’m glad to
see it back up and running. Hopefully it is still a good place to talk politics if not personal stuff.
