What’s up?

First of all, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to each and everyone of you. YOU make this community and all that it is. It has been heartening to see all the registrations and donations come in. I just cut Matt a second $500 check. So…how do you like our new home?? Share any and all feedback. Many thanks!

Here is a double standard that still exists today: non-custodial moms are stigmatized in a way that non-custodial dads are not. It is assumed that moms always get custody of children unless they are deemed unfit. I can tell you that in California that is not the case. The courts grant parents 50-50 custody arrangement unless they work out another arrangement.

A non-custodial mom wrote a blog for MomsRising on the ignorance and stigma around non-custodial moms. This article is definitely worth a read.

This article on the bludgeoning death of an Iraqi mother of five in California broke my heart. Like the Trayvon Martin case, it appears that her death was fueled by hate and now her five children, including her son Muhammed, are left without a mother.

“My condolences go out to the family of Trayvon,” Alawadi’s 15-year-old son Muhammed said at the vigil, as tears welled up in his eyes. “My candle goes out to you as well.”

This is so senseless. Why oh why are we so afraid and hateful of those who are different than us? I pray for peace and justice for Shaima Alawadi and her family.

What else is in the news? What’s up with you?
