It’s official. South Dakota passed a law, banning all abortions, except in the case where the mother’s life is in danger. The law makes no exceptions for rape or incest.
The law was signed yesterday by Republican Gov. Mike Rounds, making it possible for doctors to receive up to five years in prison for performing an illegal abortion. The law does allow for emergency contraceptive. (How generous!)
One bright light: There is the possibility that a state judge will suspend the abortion ban and let the case be heard in the Supreme Court, according to a news story by the New York Times.
There’s the possibility that the law will be overturned and the “pro-lifers” will not win. But their demonizing women may make women in that state feel uncomfortable to make the choice that is right for them. What a setback for women’s rights.
