In India, Sleep Divorce Counts

March 27, 2006

Now, before I get into detail about this story I found on cnn.com, I must give you a little bit of background…

I was 24 years old when I got married, and soon realized that I made a big mistake. I got myself an attorney and filed for divorce. My attorney was VERY sweet, and VERY old. I knew something should have clicked when he said that he was really good friends with one of the writers for the “I Love Lucy” television show. We went through the whole procedure and even went to court. I was officially divorced in November of 1996, but my attorney died before he filed the judgement. I recently hired an attorney to finish the job, and finally got the judgement last month.

With that being said, I found this story truly funny. Apparantley, a Muslim couple in India have been told by local Islamic leaders they must separate after the husband “divorced” his wife in his sleep. WHAT??

Sohela Ansari told friends that her husband Aftab had uttered the word “talaq,” or divorce, three times in his sleep. Well, when local Islamic leaders heard about this, they claimed that Aftab’s words constituted a divorce under an Islamic procedure known as “triple talaq.” The couple were told they had to split.

The couple, who have been married for 11 years and have three children, have refused to obey the order and the issue has been referred to a local family counseling center.

Now, coming from someone who just got the official judgement of divorce after almost 10 years, it would have been SO nice to just mutter, divorce, divorce, divorce in my sleep…
