Helen says hello

June 20, 2006

I am new, an old (53) mom of grown people (22 &23). My daughter is in college, my son is busy paving the world. I live in Alameda California. I joined because of a quote my daughter sent me by Mary Mcleod Bethune: “Next to God we are indebted to women, first for life itself and then for making it worth living.” I find this very striking for several reasons, but mostly because I think we may be falling down on that latter part. Life on earth seems precarious to me and I think it may be time for us to band together and try to get it back to right. Abortion rights and equal pay and childcare are important but I want to be part of a women’s movement that honors civilization, cooperation, conservation, peace. I am beginning to think it is the only hope we have. I think a phalanx of women, arms crossed and giving the dreaded mommy look might be able to end the violent video game the boys are playing with our planet and send them to bed. The men can stay up.
