Careful What Your Kids Listen To!

August 8, 2006

Did you know that the music your child/ren are listening to can trigger promiscuity? Yeah…I didn’t either.

According to this study, if you listen to songs with raunchy/sexy lyrics, you’ll start having sex sooner.

Songs depicting men as “sex-driven studs,” women as sex objects and with explicit references to sex acts are more likely to trigger early sexual behavior than those where sexual references are more veiled and relationships appear more committed, the study found.

Teens who said they listened to lots of music with degrading sexual messages were almost twice as likely to start having intercourse or other sexual activities within the following two years as were teens who listened to little or no sexually degrading music.

While I don’t allow my children to listen to this type of music, I’m not convinced about the findings of this study. Although I do agree with this article that exposure to sexually degrading music “gives them a specific message about sex,” I don’t know if I agree that music has THAT MUCH power. But, what do I know? I was a 22 year old virgin who was a member of the goth movement in the 80’s. 50 Cent was too busy selling drugs and getting shot. He wasn’t rapping about a “candy shop” back then.

What do you think?
