Body Image Issues

July 29, 2006

I’ve been thinking a lot about the collective body image issues of American Women… (I’m afraid that I don’t know enough about women in other parts of the world to know whether or not they are as plagued by this as we are here…) We are bombarded with barely decent images of women in various states of dress from early in the morning until late at night. Diet commercials, Girls Gone Wild, dating services, etc… It has reached a point where a modestly shot magazine cover of a nursing baby is cause for controversy and heated debate. (Even if it is, perhaps, a manufactured controversy?)

In my comments on the Baby Talk Boob Flap, I mentioned that I had hoped to pose for life drawing classes during and after my pregnancy… As I look at the Shape of a Mother website on blogspot, I find myself thinking that this could be a wonderful experience for many women. (Not to mention that the results of “real women” posing for aspiring artists  is that those artists may go on to influence public perceptions of human beauty for generations to come.)
