A Light at the End of the Tunnel?

May 30, 2006

Ok, I’ve got some potential good news and some potential bad news. The good news? A petition filing could halt the S. Dakota abortion ban.

The South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families said it had obtained nearly 38,000 signatures on a petition aimed at repealing an abortion ban signed into law by Gov. Mike Rounds on March 6.

The petition would be filed with the Secretary of State’s office on Tuesday afternoon, and if at least 16,728 signatures are certified as valid, the scheduled July 1 implementation of the ban would be nullified and voters would be allowed to decide the issue at the ballot box in November.

Because the S. Dakota abortion bill bans all abortions, even when pregnancies result from incest or rape, it is considered one of the most restrictive in the United States. Doctors who perform an abortion could receive a $5,000 fine and five years in prison…unless, of course, you fall into Napoli’s description of justifiable abortions:

“A real-life description to me would be a rape victim, brutally raped, savaged. The girl was a virgin. She was religious. She planned on saving her virginity until she was married. She was brutalized and raped, sodomized as bad as you can possibly make it, and is impregnated. I mean, that girl could be so messed up, physically and psychologically, that carrying that child could very well threaten her life.”

Ew. He’s disgusting.

So, the potential good news is that the July 1st implementation of the bill will be nullified with the petition. The potential bad news? It will be up to voters in November to pass this bill or not. WE NEED TO GET OUT THERE AND VOTE, PEOPLE!!!
